  • Busy Busy

Been a very hectic week and not sure where all the time has gone too. My first garage sale is this weekend - Saturday.  There has been a lot of family stuff going on which has been difficult but there may be good news on the horizon soon.  For those who pray then now would be a good time.  Especially for my dad - his name is Gordon.  God knows his issues so if you can just remember my dad to God that would be great.

I have been thinking a lot lately about self discipline.  As I have been practising 'the simple life' this has come under my scrutiny more and more.  It effects everything from our money to our health. I need eight hours sleep at night but lately I have been staying up to watch Desperate Housewives and then Law and Order Special Victims (Its on Monday to Thursday in South Africa).  At first it felt a lot like Christmas - two of my favourite programs on every night.  Anyway the next day I am tired - I get up later, don't prepare lunch and make a proper breakfast.  Then I feel hungry - and am more likely to eat bad things.  Anyway I have formulated a tip from this.

Tip No 7 - Keep your own rules - if you don't have any then start setting some

Now I am not talking about being boring and never having a spontaneous moment again  - I am just saying generally.  I need to go to bed at ten at night.  I need to cook a decent meal (means with vegetables) at least every second night. I need to exercise at  least three times a week.  I need to clean out the filter on the washing machine and defrost the fridge. As my gran used to say "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure".  Cure is usually expensive and time consuming.  So think about your life and make some decisions.  How many hours sleep do I need?  Decide to have only four blocks of chocolate or one glass of wine (or in my case coke).  That way you save money and you don't gain weight and you have something to look forward to tomorrow.

If you need some incentive then make yourself a wall chart, like when you were in grade school, where you give yourself a star for each discipline that you do. When you get two stars reward yourself.  This may sound infantile but it actaully works.

What discipline can you work on?

  • Better Days

Its been a while.  Was really sick with flu - 17 days in total although I only took a half day off.  Feel much better now - just really tired.  Had to rest for 10 minutes after hanging the washing up.  Also tomorrow is the first day of spring - now that is something to celebrate.  Hate winter - hate it, hate it, hate it. I think every update I have made on Facebook for the last three months includes that phrase.

I have taken the clothes swapping idea further and am turning my garage into a boutique / spaza (South African name for a shop that is run from a home) to supplement my income.  I have a lot of old clothes and things my parents left.  So now I am looking for everyones junk.  Anyway on Friday I am getting it all cleaned up and will sort it out over the weekend and start next week Tuesday night.  Right now I am making fliers to give to estate agents to give to people that are moving.

Tip No 6 - check your insurance

Insurance is a necessary evil but be cafeful you are not being ripped off.  Phone around for a few quotes and tell the people that you are currently insured but looking for a better deal.  I got a quote with a company for three hundred less than I am already paying.  Thank you Outsurance. When I phoned my insurance company to say that I was leaving them they still dropped a hundred rand off the new company's price.  I left them as they could have done that for me anyway.  So phone around and see if you can get a better deal.

  • Swap everything

Had a great weekend, although I started with a bad cold on Friday night.  Still croaking away but at least its not swine flu. South Africa has the second highest number of infections in the world.  Probably due to the Federations Cup (international soccer tournament) that was played here a couple of weeks ago.

Tip No 5 - Swap Everything

I saw this on Oprah a couple of weeks ago.  Have a clothes swap.  Get your friends to go through their clothes and take out everything they don't wear.  Especially the things that they will never fit into again.  This can include accessories as well CD's, books and even furniture.  There are a number of sites that deal with exactly how you want to run it (google clothes swap).  Tell everyone to bring a cake or box of biscuits (great way of stocking up fridge or pantry as you will have too much stuff  ), supply tea and coffee and start swapping.  So far I have been doing it on a more one on one basis and have now got some new things for my wardrobe - not new - but new to me.  Planning on doing the big one in September.

Have you ever been involved with a clothes swap?  How did they administer it?

  • One year married

So a year ago I was preparing for my wedding.  Daniel and I were married on the 9th of August last year.  The 9th is Womens Day in South Africa - we chose a public holiday so we will always have a holiday on our anniversary.  Its a family tradition although it does not always work so well.  My parents chose Kruger Day which was abolished when apartheid ended. My sister and her husband chose Human Rights Day and then emmigrated to Australia.  So as long as we live in South Africa and the ANC stay in power we should be safe.

There were lots of professional photos but this was my favourite.  We were laughing so hard.  So yes one year - its been tough but I think we will make the nexy 49 ok.

Tip No 4 - Marriage is expensive - learn to share

One of the most expensive things is joining your appetites.  My husband likes hot food like curry and fried food and I like vegetables, potatos and grilled cheese sandwhiches. Neither of us likes what the other one eats.  He Likes Top Deck chocolate and I like Nougat.  He likes Ginger Beer - I like Coke. This is not such a problem normally - you just buy whatever you need and we would often make two meals.  But in a recession its not practical or affordable.

We still don't really like what the other one eats so now we each cook one night and make double.  Freeze half for the next nights meal.  The next night the other one cooks and freezes half.  That way we don't waste and we both get to eat what we want and there are not loads of dishes.  We reserve treats for special occasions.  Like Monday night which is Survivor Night and Saturday nights. Instead of each getting our favourite we alternate. It takes sharing and opening yourselves up to trying new things but it works. Would also probably work with a room mate.
